Red cedar bark

Use

Rain and sun hat

Using primarily the double twining technique and triple for a durable rim

This hat took at least a months devoted labor, with over 4000 stitches its no wonder!

I harvested the bark from the tree then hand stripped the out side bark layer off the valuable inner bark, than with a knife I designed & made for this purpose cut it into thin strips & twined while keeping wet ...this process is described in full in a variety of weaving books, or find a friendly native weaver I know a few that were very helpful, try to learn some of the basics on your own it saves them a lot of frustration...then ask! your technique will improve immeasurably with proper guidance so don't neglect their insight.

Materials

Basket red cedar bark

Huckle berry picker red cedar and some drift wood bamboo

Lashings spruce root

Use

Raking through huckle berry bushes to collect fruit for winter preservation

This carving's idea came from looking at a European model in plastic & steal I thought... good idea but plastic is gross so I pondered a while on how to make the same thing out of wood

This fancy unit saves 4--5 times the labor as doing it by hand although includes some leaves which hand picking does little of. This calls for another device. A crescent trough shaped log which you pour the berries down, the leaves stick to the log and berries keep going to be collected in a basket at the end.
